LAT Feedback

Feedback from Local Action Team Event - Key Issues Raised

The numbered bullet points here represent a summary of the key issues raised at the recent city wide LAT event. Please note that exact wording from workshop flipcharts has been used in order to avoid changing meaning, but in some cases this makes the points more difficult to interpret. There is a similar document that summarises the proposed solutions to some of these issues.

1.    Broader safety focused agenda
1.1    Priorities need to be community priorities not just police priorities as stated in the ToR, and groups/residents would prefer to define what they mean by community safety. Issues discussed are much broader and include parks, planning, licensing, housing, social activities, noise, youth work, schools and parking.

New LAT for B&R?

With the lesser spotted Seafront LAT, the Brunswick (and Adelaide?) LAT, the "Old Town" LAT, is there a need for a central LAT, or a LAT to cover the areas not filled in?

If you are a LAT or consider yourself one, please let us know the areas you are defined by and we can then advise the Police and Council where they have missed in their plan of LATS

to read more about the difference/similarity of LAT's and NAG's etc see this article

Police Pledge 2009

Chief Constable Martin Richards says "Sussex Police is dedicated to Serving Sussex. Our priorities are Neighbourhood Policing, Keeping People Safe and Making Best Use of Resources.

For us, the Policing Pledge, which has now been agreed nationally, is very much business as usual. We want to do our best for you but if we fail to meet our pledge, we will always explain why it has not been possible on that occasion to deliver the high standard to which we aspire and you deserve in our commitment to Serving Sussex."

Churchill Square Stop Lines

The lining arrangements at the Clock Tower are temporary following works carried out earlier this year by Southern Water and Southern Gas Networks.

Major works are to be carried out at this junction in the Summer/Autumn which will include  Road Safety and streetscape improvements for all users.

Improvements for cyclists include widening of the carriageway at the pinch-point through the Clock Tower, making the left turn from North Street into Queen’s Road easier for cyclists, removing the ban on right turns for cyclists from Queen’s Road into North Street and new Advanced Stop Lines.

The faded Stop line in Western Road has been noted and I have asked the Project Engineer to address this in the interim.

Community Engagement Framework

The Community Engagement Framework has been developed to be both a policy document and a practical resource.

As a policy document it sets out the 2020 Community Partnership’s commitment to and
understanding of community engagement in Brighton and Hove. As a practical resource it
provides a clear definition of community engagement and importantly sets specific standards
for community engagement that all Partners must adhere to. It identifies the first wave of
priority actions that must be taken to improve community engagement in the city.

As a policy document and a practical tool the Community Engagement Framework will help the 2020 Community Partnership achieve its vision for Brighton and Hove…..download the documents here

bus shelters?

Does this make sense? a question about smoking in bus shelters

1. How many bus shelters are there within the Brighton and Hove council area (owned or not)?
2. How many of these have no smoking signs attached to them?
3.. How many of those are considered to be either "Enclosed" or "Substantially Enclosed" within the terms of the English smoking ban law?
4. How many of those that are NOT either enclosed or substantially enclosed are displaying signage stating that smoking is against the law? Locations would be helpful.
5. How many prosecutions have been made for smoking within a bus shelter? I would prefer locations split between enclosed, substantially enclosed and open shelters if available."

The government believes that alcohol abuse is the principle cause of crime, disorder and harm to health which costs the UK up to £13 billion every year.
It wants to issue a mandatory code which could include a ban on irresponsible drinks promotions and would be mandatory for pubs, clubs, off-licences and supermarkets. The proposals take a two-tiered approach with a small number of mandatory conditions for all alcohol retailers, which will ensure consistent good practice, plus new discretionary powers for local authorities to tackle problem premises where irresponsible drinking could put individuals at risk and lead to crime and anti-social behaviour.

Any premises that breach the mandatory code or local discretionary conditions that have been imposed will face a range of possible sanctions including losing their licence, having additional tough conditions imposed on their licence or, on summary conviction, a maximum £20,000 fine and/or six months imprisonment.
