Written by liamm
I have been asked by the Director of Public Health to explore the
possibility of piloting a free bike service for the city similar to the one
in Paris.

Does anyone have anything they can send me regarding schemes of this kind:
  a.. Evaluation reports
  b.. Feasability reports
  c.. General info
d.. Knowledge of any similar work carried out previously in the City
e.. Any known businesses/contacts who might be interested in bidding to
provide such a scheme
Many thanks

Cut price composting

Written by liamm

With prices going up and the recession hitting hard - it’s good to know there are still some bargains to be found.

At just £3 (plus delivery) compost bins have never been cheaper - and just months after installing one in the garden, householders will be producing their own free compost.

Brighton & Hove City Council has joined forces with the Recycle Now home composting campaign  to offer bins at their lowest ever prices. Just £3 buys you a 220 litre bin, and £8 for a 330 litre bin. The bins, which are made from recycled material, will be delivered to your door for just £5.

Residents can order their bins and find out more about home composting by visiting an exhibition at the Jubilee Library which runs until April 15. Representatives from WRAP will be available to answer any questions and to give advice.

More Big Bins

Written by Lawrence M

Giant bins are coming to a street near you even though many residents have apparently voted against their introduction.

The controversial communal containers costing more than 600 each are to be rolled out across 500 streets in Brighton and Hove during the next six months.

The changes will affect residents in 27,000 properties, starting from Monday with the Regency ward.

The whole scheme will cost taxpayers £615,000, including a new rubbish truck, but Brighton and Hove City Council estimates that in the seven years after the bins have been introduced, it will have saved almost £1 million.

The council said the move will pave the way for cleaner streets and follows the success of communal bins in other parts of the city.

All residents in streets which are getting communal bins will receive written notification giving full details.

Seafront Big Bins Latest

Written by liamm

Controversial communal bins are planned to be introduced across central Brighton and Hove – even in roads where residents have opposed them.

Only seafront Regency squares – such as Brunswick Square and Lewes Crescent – are to be exempt from the scheme, The Argus can reveal.

A recommendation to put more than 500 massive bins is to go to Brighton and Hove City Council’s cabinet next month.

The move will affect 185,000 residents between Davigdor Road and the seafront and from Sackville Road in Hove to Boundary Road in Kemp Town.

Last September the council delayed its plans after objections. It agreed to consult residents on the scheme, which will spell the end for doorstep bin collections.

cut down rubbish?

Written by liamm

Rubbish collections in a city centre are to be cut from twice to once a week.

The change is being introduced to an area covering 25 streets around Brunswick and Palmeira squares, Hove, from October 6.

While most of the city centre will see communal bins next year, Brunswick’s seafront squares will be exempt.

Councillor Paul Elgood, who represents Brunswick and Adelaide, warned weekly collections will send the area back to the days when rubbish was dumped on the streets.

Freecycle closes down

Written by Claire

Hello Brighton Freecycle Members,
Rob and I who have been running this group for years have been forced to find alternative ways of helping you RE-USE and RECYCLE your stuff. We are not the 'owners' of the Brighton Freecycle Group- we JUST run it 24 hours a day. We can no longer volunteer our time under the banner of Freecycle.
Thank you for making the Brighton Freecycle group the success it has been.
We are sorry that we can not continue under the Freecycle umbrella and hope you will join us on the NEW group we have set up.(There is no one left to run the official Freecycle group for Brighton.)
We have created a NEW group so you can all carry on as if nothing has happened :)
