The main reason for our move is a simple one.
While
Freecycle is a GREAT idea, all moderators of the UK groups have been
forced to follow rules which were not created specifically for the UK.
Leaders
of Freecycle in the UK have spent more than two years talking with the
main Freecycle Network (in the USA) trying to get the freedom to run
things in a way more suited to how Freecycle works in the UK. So we can
make it better for all of us.
Nothing has been changed.
Earlier
this summer four leading members of the National UK Freecycle team
resigned including the Director , in protest at the lack of change .
Moderators around the country then formed an Independent Association of
Moderators and AGAIN tried talking with The Freecycle Network.Hoping to
negotiate and find a positive way to continue under the banner of
Freecycle.
This has not been possible.
We acknowledge that what
Freecycle does in the community is great. We just don't agree that we
should be dictated to from across the Atlantic and adopt inappropriate
policies. We think the members and moderators make Freecycle great.
There
has now been multiple summary expulsions of moderators who have asked
for change from Freecycle. All UK moderators have lost their freedom of
speech within the organisation. So here in Brighton we have decided to
go our own way along with the majority of other Freecycle UK groups.
What's changed for you?
Nothing
much. The home page looks a bit different, the email address is
different, but other than that all the rules are the same and all the
moderators are the same and just as committed to keeping items out of
landfill.

Update - new emails from Freecycle.
Hi everyone, please accept my sincere apologies for the temporary loss of the group. The moderators who I had trusted to run things took it upon themselves to REMOVE the group without consultation with either myself, or you the members. After consultation with yahoo I have managed to get our wonderful group back up and running and I'm looking to get some new (trustworthy) moderators asap. Please be patient over the next few days as we get things running again.
Sincerely
Larry Pickleman
Brighton Freecycle Owner
Hi all,
I've had a lot of emails from users about emails from greencyclesussex telling them that freecycle Brighton is no more.
Just to clear things up for you all, the moderators who took it upon themselves to close this group and start a new one firstly downloaded everyone's emails with a view to contacting you all about the new group.
Not only is it wrong that Brighton Freecycle no longer exists, but what the owners of Greencycle sussex are doing by is in complete breach of Yahoos data protection terms and conditions and I sincerely apologise for this. I've been in touch with Yahoo and made them aware of this matter and they will be dealing with it accordingly.
Should anyone have any concerns or complaints or questions then please contact me directly, messages will not be posted to the group.
Other than that, it's business as usual, and thank you all again for your patience over the last week.

Just a quick clear up on the "Brighton Freecycle Owner" issue and a few other questions that a lot of you are asking. All yahoo groups require what is called an "Owner" to exist. It does not mean I "own" the group, or see myself as the "owner".
I have been a moderator with Brighton Freecycle for over 5 years and became "Owner" when Richard Amos who originally set up the group left Brighton several years ago. I have lived in Brighton for 8 years and have overseen the growth, policies and also many moderator changes and disputes within this time.
Brighton freecycle is still 100% independent and locally run so don't worry that it has been taken over by outsiders. There are still legal disputes about whether we have the right to use the term "freecycle" and you can read some interesting facts about it here.

Once again, thanks for hanging in there and feel free to contact me if there are any other issues you'd like cleared up.
All the best.
