Brighton and Hove City Council is looking at changing its policy on traders’ placements and A boards in order to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).The council has taken some key points from the DDA and the Inclusive Mobility Guidance, and with its legal team, has drawn up criteria meet the requirements.
The council is proposing a clear passageway of 1.3 metres. It is also proposing the introduction of criteria limiting the number of objects that can be placed in a continuous line along the pavement. This will better enable turning or crossing for people with mobility issues.

There is also a suggestion that remote A-boards (i.e. more than 5 metres from the premises) will be banned altogether.
All traders affected have been contacted with a letter inviting their comments. The policy will be presented in a report to Licensing Committee, which will give elected members an opportunity to consider the proposals. Comments need to be in by the end of February and the council hopes to present the report in April.
