NEW Healthwalks Led Walks Programme 2008-2009
The new Autumn/Winter 2008/09 Led Healthwalks Programme is out now. You can download it now from our webpages http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1115741 Now in its fifth year, Healthwalks continues to go from strength to strength. We have 14 weekly walks on every day of the week across the city, and have attracted over 500 walkers in the last few months alone. As ever, all walks are free, clearly graded, led by Volunteer Walk Leaders, and on bus routes. Half are also wheelchair and buggy friendly. They are suitable for all ages and abilities, and provide a range of physical and mental health benefits, as well as being a great way to get out of the house and meet new people. Best wishes Corinna Edwards-Colledge Brighton & Hove Healthwalks Please note, I work Wednesday to Friday 01273 292564 / www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/healthwalks Kings House, Grand Avenue, Hove, BN3 2LS To find out about other physical activity opportunities in the city: www.activeforlife.org.uk

care to share project
Hello,
We have recently launched the Care to Share project (funded by SEEDA) which is working with the Care Sector helping with their recruitment and retention for a range of roles from maintenance, gardening, administration and care assistants.
This is a free alternative recruitment service available to the care industry along the coastal strip (Bognor to Hastings) who wish to engage with us and we have links with many local providers who can help with pre-employment training and in-house skills assessments for the current staff team.

5-6 Western Road

We have been asked what is going on with this 'project' and are glad to report the following news. Our keen eyed observer Claire spotted some major things happening at the Farman Street passage and this is the email chain that went on between the council, EBRA and others, (It is spread over several pages though! ) Subject: Re: 5-6 Western Road, Hove
Dear Matt I notice that wooden steps are being erected at the side of this building in the alley where the ramp was sited. What is going on here? No plans were approved for steps? Thanks

Taj Flooding
If you have not already noticed, there is a swimming pool forming outside Taj on the corner of Western Road.
The EBRA have taken this project under their wing and along with pictures from Friends of Bedford square. Here is the response from Cllr Sven Rufus I have had an email about the pavement in front of Taj - the first step will be for an inspection which will need to take place after heavy rain (pray for rain?). After that I will be told what the engineers report says, and what steps they think will be needed to remedy the problem. I don't think this is going to be a quick one somehow.... I'll keep you posted. All the best Sven Better pictures (and a resolution) are required!

New rules on dogs agreed
City-wide by-laws go live in the new year following consultation with residents New rules on keeping dogs under control and making our city safer and cleaner come into force on 1 January. Up until now we’ve had separate bylaws for Brighton and for Hove – a hangover from when they were two separate councils. The streamlining of our bylaws follows extensive consultation by the council with residents. Cleaning up after dogs, keeping them on leads and banning them from some areas of the city were among a series of measures on which we asked people’s views. The new rules will be simpler and easier to follow. They focus on preventing road traffic accidents, dogs out of control, and reducing the risk of the toxocara disease being transmitted to children. Fixed penalty notices for offences have been set at £80 and will be enforced by the council’s animal welfare service. Under the new rules dog owners must remove their dog’s poo from all public land. This includes all streets, pavements, the bases of trees, promenades, the Undercliff Walk, parks, open plan gardens and car parks. It applies to all land belonging to the city council, town and parish councils, and rights of way that cross such land.

Planning for lights
We have had raised the issue of illuminated advertising boards, or internally illuminated signs. Several of our members feel that they should, if allowed under planning consent, be restricted to the times they are in operation or use low power lighting.

Lighting up North street and the clock tower.
"I feel that the way the council invited some people to the lighting up ceremony and only advertised it on line a farce! they could at least have told the local newspaper and then managed to block off the whole of north street with crowds of people like they did last year."
Should they have advertised it more?
